iSBTc Represented at NHLBI-PACT Meeting

In recognition of iSBTc’s expertise in adoptive immunotherapy, several iSBTc members were invited to participate on the organizing committee for a workshop entitled “Converging Concepts in Cell Therapy” hosted by the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Production Assistance for Cellular Therapies program (PACT). This Workshop was held April 23-24, 2009 in Bethesda, MD and included expert lectures by several iSBTc members including current President, Bernard A. Fox, PhD; Carl H. June, MD; Pawel Kalinski , MD , PhD; Steven A. Rosenberg, MD, PhD; Marianna Sabatino, David Stroncek, MD; and Theresa L. Whiteside, PhD.

The agenda included discussions related to immunological function and behavior of cells; therapeutic properties and clinical application of cell therapy; unique biotechnology-based approaches to product characterization and cell processing; cell trafficking and imaging techniques and treatments involving a select group of cell-based products key aspects. Slide presentations from the workshop as well as additional resources related to GMP facility design and procedures are available at the PACT website (www.pactgroup.net) and through the Related Links section of the iSBTc website.

Renew Your Dues Today

In these times, it is essential to have a network of peers to support your work and advocate for your interests. iSBTc continues to organize and advocate for the best education in the field, collaboration among constituents, and the implementation of timely, cutting-edge translational clinical research in cancer biotherapy. For further support, we've added two new member benefits:

Member Spotlight - NEW!

Kerrington R. Molhoek
Kerrington R. Molhoek
Research Associate
University of Virginia

To assist iSBTc members in building relationships and networking with other investigators, iSBTc presents the "Member Spotlight." This section will be included in each issue of E-news and will profile an iSBTc member.

In this issue, we feature Kerrington Molhoek, PhD, Co-Chair of iSBTc's newly established Young Investigator Taskforce which is focused on fostering the development of young scientists within the Society.

What are your research interests?
My research focuses primarily on cell signaling in melanoma. Specifically, I am interested in examining Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (RTK) activity and potential autocrine growth factors for melanomas. In understanding the signaling environment I hope to find ways to target aberrant signaling in melanomas to inhibit growth and improve methods of therapy.

How does being a member of iSBTc help you?
It has helped me develop connections with colleagues and collaborators. Having access to other iSBTc members for reviewing ideas and soliciting advice has been invaluable. I have had the opportunity to become involved on multiple levels in iSBTc. As a member, I have access to the most up-to-date information in the field. Being a participant at the annual meetings, has allowed me the opportunity to speak about my work and get valuable feedback from presentations and poster sessions. As a member of the Young Investigator Task Force, I have had the opportunity to reinforce the aspects which have made the iSBTc so valuable to me. Programs for young investigators including special awards, mentoring assistance, networking opportunities and career development are extremely important to members of the iSBTc. Travel awards especially provide an opportunity for young investigators to access the annual meeting and understand and appreciate membership in iSBTc. Most of all, I value my membership because iSBTc has always made me feel as if I were a valuable member, not just a number.

How do you spend your time outside of your professional life?
I love to spend time with my family, to travel and to fish. I am an avid college football and basketball fan (Go Hoos!). I also enjoy the opportunity to relax with a good book.
